Kaibab Indra Swallowtail [Papilio indra kaibabensis] Adult Insect Images

The Kaibab Swallowtail is found predominately inside the protected Grand Canyon National Park area. Although there are rumored to be a few places to collect it outside of park boundaries, legally-collected specimens are quite rare. Intergrade indra populations with nearly 100% kaibabensis genes may also be found in mountain ranges near the park. Unfortunately, poached specimens are said to ocassionally turn-up for sale on international black markets.

Considering the scarcity of legal specimens, I consider myself fortunate to take these photos of Papilio indra kaibabensis from the L.A. Natural History Museum's collection...
