Martin's Swallowtail is found predominately inside the protected Mojave Preserve in San Bernardino Co., CA. Although there are rumored to be a few places to collect it outside of preserve boundaries, legally-collected specimens are quite rare and usually from old
collections, before the creation of the preserve. Intergrade indra populations with nearly 100% martini genes may also be found in mountain ranges near the preserve. Unfortunately, poached specimens are said to ocassionally turn-up for sale on international black markets.
Considering the scarcity of legal specimens, I consider myself fortunate to take these photos of Papilio indra martini from the L.A. Natural History Museum's collection...
